Assistant Professor, Biology, UNC-CH
Senay Yitbarek is an assistant professor in the department of biology at UNC where he runs the Hoi Polloi Lab, which studies the ecology and evolution of species interactions. He and his team are broadly interested in the evolutionary ecology of host-natural enemy interactions with the overall goal of understanding how organisms spread, persist, and affect their host populations.
After obtaining his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, Senay completed his PhD in ecology & evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Senay returned back to UC Berkeley as a NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in biology followed by a USDA NIFA Fellowship, before joining the department of biology at UNC.
With funding from a Center for Galapagos Studies Seed Grant, Dr. Yitbarek studies the interplay between global change and host-pathogen dynamics in the Galapagos, currently focusing on San Cristobal Island.
