Acacia is interested in studying the marine microbial community using the ‘omics approaches. Her current project is titled “Microbial niches in the Galápagos Archipelago revealed by genome-resolved quantitative metagenomics.” Acacia has recovered genomic sequences for individual microbial populations and estimated their abundances in seawater. Their genomic content and abundance informs us about which ecological niches they have adapted to. Marine microbes influence primary production and carbon cycling and can have an impact on terrestrial and marine animals at the Galapagos.
