The Center for Galapagos Studies has awarded three new Seed Grants to UNC-Chapel Hill researchers from the Gillings School of Public Health, the Carolina Population Center, and the College of Arts and Sciences to launch new projects in the Galapagos this summer.
Thanks to the funding of a Center for Galapagos Studies seed grant, Senay Yitbarek, Peter Thacher Grauer Fellow and assistant professor in the department of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, traveled to the Galapagos this summer to conduct research on host-pathogen dynamics on San Cristobal Island.
This summer, the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito debuted a 12-week social work program for Galapagos locals to study and earn a certificate in community development and social work.
Savannah Ryburn, a UNC Ph.D. student in the Environment, Ecology and Energy Program in the College of Arts and Sciences, has dedicated the last five years to researching the diet of juvenile blacktip and scalloped hammerhead sharks in the Galapagos Islands using a cutting-edge technique called metabarcoding.
