Hannah Jahnke, a PhD candidate in Anthropology, was awarded the National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant for her dissertation research on the intergenerational effects of maternal stress on the Galápagos. For this work, Hannah will live for one year on the islands, interviewing pregnant and postpartum women about their experiences of stress and motherhood. Hannah will also collect physiological and growth measurements, including salivary cortisol to examine the stress axis, placenta biomarkers to assess how stress induces epigenetic changes, and infant stool to analyze the effect of stress on infant microbiome development.
