Outreach Programs
Outreach and knowledge transfer programs are vital elements of the collaborative enterprise between USFQ and UNC-Chapel Hill in the Galapagos Islands. The intention is for both institutions to develop programs that explicitly build cooperation, association, and partnership with island residents and institutions through, for instance, our engagement in local education and training in the public schools, contributing to the understanding of family issues and community management, enhancement of human health and access to care, assessment of alternative household livelihood strategies, and consideration of population-environment interactions with critical implications for tourism, fisheries, and conservation and development industries in the islands. Relying upon basic and applied research and a statement of family and community needs, programs will be developed that draw from the full complement of faculty and students from both campuses who have skills, interests, and abilities to work with individuals, households, communities, and institutions and to link actions to needs that effectively address vital topics in the lives of local people and the social and ecological vulnerabilities of the Galapagos Islands more generally.
